Panama has great potential for developing a data warehousing and call center business, taking advantage of robust connectivity infrastructure and solid financial metrics, Frank de Lima, the country’s deputy economy minister, told BNamericas.

The official said the country has yet to even “scratch the surface” with its potential for data warehousing.

“Panama’s geographic position is a blessing. We don’t have hurricanes or earthquakes like other countries have. We have six fiber optic lines that run from Panama. I think Panama is a safe haven for companies to use as a back up to house their data here,” he said.

Mike Burke is the chief financial officer at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. He sat down with editor Richard Pizzi to discuss how the finance team at the medical center dealt with the recession.

What’s been the biggest financial impact of the recession on NYU Langone Medical Center?
The biggest impact on NYU has been the impact of the recession on state government. The cut in the tax revenue stream in the state has led to a cut in Medicaid payments. Another big impact was the liquidity crisis in the stock market and the impact that had on financial returns. Like a lot of people, we took a hit on our investments.

SAN DIEGO – The University of California, San Diego has announced plans to build a state-of-the-art medical center on UC San Diego’s east campus in La Jolla, Calif.

The new Jacobs Medical Center project is expected to cost $664 million, with about $350 million coming from external financing, $131 million from philanthropy and the remainder from state bonds, reserves and capitalized leases.

The Jacobs Medical Center will be a 10-story, 490,000 square-foot facility adjacent to UC San Diego Health System’s Thornton Hospital. I
