Perfume and cologne have been long-loved by many throughout the centuries and across the world. However, there are many who often are confused or misunderstand what the difference is between the two types. Some also believe that cologne is designed for men, while perfume is meant for women to wear when that’s not exactly the case.

People have been using perfume since the ancient times of Mesopotamia and Egypt, and it has become more refined and advanced throughout other cultures ever since. France is one country who has truly helped with the advancement of perfume, seeking out to make it an art form as much as a science, and is now the largest industry where perfume is concerned.

Perfume is known for being a strong scent, though it was originally a wide-spread complaint that it didn’t last long enough. Eventually, the French set out to resolve this is issue by giving perfume a layer of notes, which are meant to drag out the scent of a perfume over a long period of time, all while giving it a sense of beauty and depth.

There are three types of notes within a perfume’s scent, which helps to give it both longevity and beauty. The notes are designed to blend into a series of scents, building it up until the very end, much like the notes of classic music. Since the smell will change, it’s important to always test a perfume fully for a good while before purchasing, rather than strictly deciding based on the first note, which can last for several minutes.

The first note that one often notices is called the Top Note, or Head Note, and is what generally makes the first impression. The second note is known as the Middle Note, which is often designed to crop up just before the first note ends, as well as downplaying the initial approach of the final note. The third and final note is referred to as the Base Note, which is often heavier and comes well after the initial application, and carries along with the middle note as the main theme of the perfume.

It’s frequently misunderstood that colognes are meant for men only, often due to mass labeling and trends in stores. Colognes and perfumes, however, can be worn by both men and women, whether they’re aware of it or not. Colognes are more subtle and don’t last as long, but they’re generally less expensive and bear a single note, rather than three different ones.

Eau de toilettes and eau de perfumes are the more commonly known names for colognes, especially for women. Generally they come in spray form, although some can be dabbed onto the skin much like perfumes. Eau de perfumes are less expensive than perfumes, but still care a somewhat long-lasting sent, making them a popular choice. Eau de toilette scents generally last for about three to four hours, and are excellent for those who are wanting something more subtle.

When applying perfume and cologne, it’s important understand the correct methods for applying as each, in order to avoid going overkill or not making the most of the scent. For perfumes and eau de perfumes, it is generally suggested to dab (or spray for eau de perfume) a small amount onto on pulse points such as in the crook of your arm, ankles, behind the knees, the neck, between the breasts or the thighs. Colognes sprays and eau de toilettes can simply be sprayed directly in front of you, eyes closed, and walking through the light mist.

Who here enjoys wearing perfume? If you love to smell good, then we are sure you do. Cologne is another wise choice amongst those who have a love for smelling good.
