Everyone is entitled to a free credit report annually from each of big credit bureaus. It is recommended that you check each report thoroughly as there is often different information on each credit report. This occurs because each credit bureau keeps your personal information private. Unfortunately it also opens the door for inaccurate information.
The main credit agencies are: TransUinon, Experian and Equifax. They are all mandated to send you a complimentary copy of your credit report every year upon your request.
Once you receive your credit reports make sure you read them carefully and look for any old or incorrect data. If you find anything you should get a hold of the credit bureau in question to sort out the error.
Please note that you have to personally request your free reports in one of three ways: 1) call 1-877-322-8228 2) go online to annual credit report .com (this a government regulated portal which enables you to retrieve your credit reports online) 3) request a Annual Credit Report Request brochure by contacting the FTC (federal trade commission), fill out the back and mail it.
What will your credit report have on it? The report is simply a brief summary your credit products and your payment history. You will find a list of accounts, credit products and their outstanding balances along with a history of any missed or late payments.
When you receive your credit you will not find a credit score. A credit score or FICO score is a numbered rating based on the FICO scale to help lenders determine your credit worthiness based on information on your credit report. Poor credit ratings are often the result of old or inaccurate information, which is why it so important to check your report often.
When you order your credit report you really should go through a centralized agency, otherwise it take a lot longer to get through an individual credit bureau. You may order all three reports at the same time or separately throughout the year.
