What is a CBT?

CBT or Compulsory basic training as it is more formally known is a test that must be completed before you will be able to ride on the road on a motorcycle moped or scooter with L plates for up to two years. If you have had your driving licence before the 1st of February 2001 then you will not need to take a CBT to ride a scooter or moped at or below 50cc, for 125cc and above bikes you will need to obtain a CBT licence. Once you have passed and received your CBT certificate, you can carry on to take additional training to pass your tests and qualify for a full motorcycle or moped licence.

If you do not take further tests or fail any further tests then you will need to renew your CBT certificate before it becomes invalid if you wish to carry on using your bike, this is most commonly two years after completion of your original CBT.
