The Verdict: Are you an alumni or student at The Citadel, one of the oldest military colleges in the country? If so, you might consider applying for The Citadel Visa Platinum Card. This card doesn’t come with a rewards program. But it does offer an attractive purchase interest rate, depending on the state of your credit. And every time you use this card to make a purchase, The Citadel will receive a small financial donation.

Credit cards are potentially a great way to manage fluctuating income or spending.  They can also be a cause of distress when they are not used responsibly.  This does not need to be the case and a few relatively simple steps should be able to keep your finances steady. The first thing that is required is having a good attitude.  This may sound vague but it is vital to respect credit and the fact that because credit can be a powerful tool it can also, when used badly, cause considerable damage.

A big part of the attitude is self-awareness and having the ability to know your limits.  One example of this is with interest free balance transfers that require a large amount of discipline both not to spend on the card and to renew the card in time.  If these steps are not followed then the card can become very expensive rather than a cheap source of credit.  If a person knows that they do not have this discipline then they can look for easier ways to take advantage of credit cards.

Spending wisely is a very important part of the wise use of credit.  It is true that a credit card means that more can be bought than relying on a salary alone.  This however, does not mean that everything should be bought.  Credit cards should be used as a way of smoothing spending rather than increasing spending.

It is important to always pay back more than the minimum repayments.  Although minimum repayments are usually below the interest that is charged in the month, and is designed so that the card holder will eventually pay the balance off – this is very much in the future.  A card holder should aim to pay off as much as possible and definitely more than the minimum balance.  If there is trouble paying off more than the minimum balance then this is a warning sign that there is some potential trouble with the card.

It is important as well as paying more than the minimum to have a long term plan to pay off the balance.  Most people aim to retire at some point, which means that debts need to be paid down.  As credit cards are relatively high interest debts then these need to be paid off relatively quickly.
Responsible card users should also pay attention to the card terms and conditions.  They must be prepared to switch cards if the terms become unfavorable.

There are many cards on the market that offer rewards based on the amount of purchases you charge. Some give you vouchers that you can use to purchase items at a particular store. Others give you airline miles that you can cash in free trips. Some even give you cash back. If you are interested in these types of cards, your best bet is to apply for a cash back card. Why? While rewards and gifts are nice, nothing beats cash.

That being said, which card is the best for cash back? Personally, I would recommend the Discover Card. They have never had an annual fee and have been paying cash back since they came onto the market.

No credit history? No problem!

There are a number of ways to begin establishing a credit score so you can enjoy low rates on everything from credit cards to home loans.

If you are starting from scratch, it is probably best to follow these steps:

  • Apply for a secured credit card – We like secured credit cards because individuals with no credit or poor credit can use them to establish a strong credit history. Here’s how a secured credit card works: a secured credit card requires a deposit, which is usually equal to your credit limit. In other words, if you accept a secured credit card with a $500 credit limit you will likely be required to hand over a deposit for $500, as well. The

Q: The limit on my credit card is pretty small and I was wondering, how can I get this limit raised?

A: Getting a high limit takes time. You don’t go from getting your first student card to a 50K limit overnight, or even in a year. With that said, there are things you can do to speed things up and get your limit raised sooner rather than later.

One thing you can do is to ask for a higher limit. Yep, it’s really that simple. The credit card company won’t always say yes (especially in a credit crunch like right now), but this is a much faster way than simply waiting for them to contact you about it. If yo
