Authorities said a thief unable to outrun deputies was too weighed down by his own burglary tools and stolen loot to escape, KPTV-TV in Portland reported.

Lawrence Hendon had a pair of bolt cutters around his neck, several burglary tools in his jacket and his pockets were filled with $61 in coins Wednesday near Clackamas Town Center, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. That made it impossible for him to get away after cutting the padlocks off bins holding The Oregonian newspaper, deputies said.

A sheriff’s spokesman said Hendon broke into one of the bins shortly before his arrest.

Deputies were first called to a bus center near the mall Wednesday afternoon after a report of a man trying to steal a bicycle. When Hendon was approached, he was standing on a light rail platform with a bicycle, deputies said.

Hendon jumped from the platform and began to run down the tracks to avoid deputies, who were able to quickly apprehend him, said Detective Jim Strovink.

Hendon has a long criminal career and records show he has been arrested 44 times, Strovink said. He had registered as a sex offender shortly before he was taken into custody Wednesday.

Hendon has been cited on charges of criminal mischief, theft and possession of burglary tools.
